The main aim of work package 3 (WP3) is to find and define a conceptual design of the core interferometer with regard to geometry, topology and configuration that can surpass the Standard Quantum Limit significantly. A third-generation detector would probably make use of new facilities, therefore we can envisage a detector with a very different topology and geometry from first and second generation instruments.

WP3 contains three main threads: reduction of quantum noise, the effects of high laser power and the study of alternative detector geometries. Eventually these threads will merge and a conceptual design in form of a draft optical layout shall be derived.
